Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a natural and effective way to look after your skin.

What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic Acupuncture also known as Facial Rejuvenation is a safe, gentle and natural anti-aging practice to enhance beauty and wellbeing. The treatment can be used to assist in softening lines and wrinkles, lifting sagging, increasing firmness and boosting blood circulation for that bright, even and glowing skin that everyone dreams of having. It also addresses your health and the whole body, so problem skin and Acne can be eliminated. Being safe, natural and gentle, there is so much that Facial Rejuvenation can treat.

Although it may sound like a relatively new idea, Cosmetic Acupuncture is supported by almost 5000 years of documentation and has since then been refined and developed into a practice we can bring to modern Australia.

Very fine needles that are made especially to be used for the face are inserted using different techniques on different areas of the face to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to achieve a firming effect to the face.

Cosmetic Acupuncture: How does it work?

Dr. Vivian’s “Triple Threat Against Aging” is a unique 3 step system that incorporates the most integral techniques for anti-aging.
Here is how Cosmetic Acupuncture works to create a more youthful appearance:
1. Muscle layer: target motor points in weakened and dropped muscles to tighten, lift and tone.
2. Soft tissue and skin: stimulate collagen and elastin production to soften lines and add back firmness.
3. Blood circulation and general health: boost blood circulation to enhance oxygenation to cells in the face and balance disharmonies in       the body to promote a glow from the inside out.

Cosmetic Acupuncture: Does it work?

People often ask, “Does Cosmetic Acupuncture really work?”, and the answer is yes. Realistic expectations of Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments include an improved more even and glowing complexion, increased moisture and hydration to skin, a gradual increase in tone and firmness, softening of lines and wrinkles and lifting and tightening of sagging or drooping areas. People that suffer from problem skin such as acne, dryness, eczema and rosacea can also expect their skin problems to be greatly reduced, if not eliminated completely.

Cosmetic Acupuncture results:

From experience with patients in the clinic, results of hydrated, softened and glowing skin are visible within 1 – 2 weeks. At 4-6 weeks, skin around the mouth and cheeks feels tighter and lines are beginning to soften. One of the most common feedback we get is that patients say that even after the first treatment they find their skin has become softer and easier to manage. Their skin is hydrated and dryness disappears– this is due to the instant blood flow that arrives to the face and skin during the facial acupuncture.

Results are going to depend on your own body’s ability to respond to the stimulation that the facial needles and treatment provide. The healthier you are and the better you look after yourself, the faster and better your results will be because you are responding more rapidly due to your body “functioning” at its best and giving you the most optimal response. Unlike Botox and fillers, there is nothing being injected or added to your face. The needles will be placed in certain locations with a number of different techniques to start of a process of collagen production in the local area to produce firmness and softening of lines.

Our Results Timeline page may help you gain a better understanding of changes you can expect during the course of your Facial Acupuncture treatments.

Cosmetic Acupuncture: How many sessions will I need?

Every person responds differently to treatment but patients can usually see an improvement in skin tone and colour after the first session, however, more substantial and visible results are usually seen after about 6-8 treatments.
Maintenance sessions are recommended every 4 to 8 weeks. By keeping this up, the results can last for years.

We have put together a guide about Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment plan for your age, so you can learn more about what is happening with your skin, how we can help with those concerns, and how many treatments it may take.

Frequently asked questions about Cosmetic Acupuncture

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment?
There isn’t really any preparation involved before Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment. We suggest patients to come in with a clean face, however, we understand that many people are uncomfortable with this or are coming from work, so we have cleansers at the clinic to remove your make up before starting treatment. Try to wear clothes that you are comfortable in so you are as relaxed as possible.

We have put together a comprehensive guide as to what to expect in your first treatment with information about arrivals, the treatment itself and anything else you may need to know.

Does Cosmetic Acupuncture hurt?
No, Cosmetic Acupuncture does not hurt.

The needles used in the face are as little as 0.12 of a millimetre - that’s finer than half of your hair strand.

The majority of patients do not feel a thing, however it is not unusual to feel a tiny and very quick prick as the needle is first inserted into your skin. This will disappear in a split second and the rest of the treatment is virtually painless and discomfort-free. Many patients actually comment on how relaxing it is.

Cosmetic Acupuncture Melbourne uses only the best needles in the world. These Japanese-made specialised facial needles have an innovated tip (among many other special features) that push skin molecules apart instead of cutting through them, for a smooth and completely painless insertion.

Are there any side effects or downtime involved with Cosmetic Acupuncture?
Cosmetic acupuncture is gentle and safe.

There is no downtime associated with facial acupuncture, which means you can have treatments without having to worry how it may affect your day. We do however recommend being gentle with your body and rest after each session as the effect of acupuncture does still continue to work even after the needles have been taken out.

The most likely effects post-treatment include flushing of the face. This is very normal and related to the increased circulation of blood to the face. Occasionally minor and temporary bruising may occur at the site of needle insertion. This is usually painless and resolves itself after a couple of days.

What type of needles do you use?
Seirin Acupuncture NeedlesAt the clinic, we use a very advanced needle that is designed to be used specially for the face.

The facial needles are Japanese needles that are coated in a special silicone for painless and smooth insertion. They also have a innovated tip that pushes skin molecules apart without cutting or breaking the skin.

Different needles have been trialed before ordering these top of the range needles, but we find that these needles are in a league of its own for quality and comfort for our patients!

Are there instances when I shouldn’t have Cosmetic Acupuncture?
Cosmetic Acupuncture should be used with precaution if:

  • you are pregnant
  • you have a migraine/severe headaches

During your consultation, Dr. Vivian Tam will make an assessment of your suitability for Facial Acupuncture.

Can I have Cosmetic Acupuncture if I have had Botox?
Facial Acupuncture can still be performed in areas that have Botox by avoiding the muscle layer and working on a more superficial skin layer. Cosmetic acupuncture can still target other areas of the face that are free from Botox for eg: Some of our patients have Botox around their eyes, and still have Cosmetic Acupuncture in the forehead and around the mouth.
