Curious about facial rejuvenation acupuncture, but daunted by the idea of small needles being inserted in your face? Don’t be. In this article, we give an honest answer to our most commonly asked question – ‘What does cosmetic acupuncture feel like?’
From the number of needles used, to the range of sensations you’ll experience, we’ve included comprehensive answers that will set your mind at ease. Read on.
The acupuncture needles used by your practitioner are very fine and very sharp, which allows them to easily and painlessly penetrate the skin. At Cosmetic Acupuncture Melbourne, we use only the highest quality needles available, made in Japan.
These needles are ultra-fine (eliminating bruising) and vary in width from 0.12mm – 0.18mm. The finer needles are used for sensitive areas, such as around the eyes and upper lip, while stronger, slightly thicker needles are used to help relax the frown muscles or lift the cheeks.
In cosmetic acupuncture, 30 to 50 ultra-fine acupuncture needles are inserted, depending on the skin concerns being addressed. These may be placed in the forehead, cheeks, around the eyes, jawline, neck and decolletage, as well as the hands and feet.
Unlike botox or skin needling, there is no pain involved in facial acupuncture, and no prior numbing is required. This is because the nerves that feel pain or sharp sensations are in the very top layer of the skin. If cosmetic acupuncture is done correctly and with ultra-fine, quality needles, the needles will pass that layer and not cause any pain.
Most people don’t feel a thing as the needles are inserted. However, if you’re very sensitive you may feel a sensation similar to a tiny bite that will last no more than half a second.
Overall, the experience is very relaxing. At our clinic, we also place some needles in the hands and feet to promote the free flow of qi, encourage relaxation and reduce inflammation. This can also boost energy if that’s what the client needs.
Once the needles are inserted, you’re left in a quiet, dark room to relax (with a warm blanket and heated bed) for around 20 minutes. During this time, many clients drift off.
During the treatment, you might start to feel a heavy and dull, but not unpleasant, sensation around where some of the needles are placed. A needle or two might even pop itself out of the face. This is a good thing, and simply means your body recognises there is a ‘foreign object’ and is responding to the micro trauma.
This micro trauma is an important and desirable part of cosmetic acupuncture. By creating ‘trauma’, the body’s healing response is activated, resulting in an increase in collagen production and firmer, more radiant and youthful looking skin over time.
At Cosmetic Acupuncture Melbourne, all treatments start with an energising Gua Sha facial massage. This traditional Chinese technique encourages lymphatic drainage and blood circulation to reduce puffiness, firm the facial contours and promote a healthy glow.
